Eigth Palaver

Well... this is a bit of an odd story. I asked a friend to close the idea thread an.. well... he was kinda new. So I had to reopen this. For all those curious, this would be the chat thread.

though im not excited that theyre getting sequels already.

I like what you guys said about the pokemon games and such, but in my own opinion they should just stop. They've drained so much out of the Pokemon Series that it's just getting pathetic. They should start making plans or something for a new Series. Call it something different, and make it about something else. Pokemon was fun at the beginning but now they are running out of ideas and fans deserve better than pokemon who are called "Sawk" and "Throh".

emeraldrafael said:Why dont you love it any moer?

Kind of for the reasons that Seth had mentioned.
I think the series is getting drug out way too much.
Too many moronic Pokemon. I don't like any of them.
The games are even getting complicated in a way, compared to the originals.
I don't know. I like the old ones still. In all honesty, I think the new ones just suck.

I dont by the "they're suddenly out of ideas now in the fifth gen and peokemon are looking dumber" because even in the first gen there were dumb looking and just dumb pokemon (and not the ones you would think). Mewtwo always looked constipated (and this is in the R/B before they had the tv show to start modeling them after), charizard looked like he suffered from a case of the downs (no offense intended to those that do), and margmar looked like an 8 lb water baby, to paraphrase the venture brothers. Not to mention ones like Muk who was sludge (and this is somehow better than a pokemon that looks like a bag of garbage), jynx who was a racist stereotype, and of course we had snakes, rats, and birds as the basis for design which isnt exactly impressively creative. especially with names like Hitmonchan and hitmonlee (oh haha, I see what oyu did there, Hit Man Jackie Chan/Bruce Lee, haha, thats so funny -_-#), Muk (cause hes a muck, which is another word for sludge, which is what he looks like, arent we witty), seel (see, its a seal, but its called seEl), etc., etc.

thats all in just the first gen, and while I'd admite theres been some bad designs in particular in the fifth gen, and some names could use work, its no worse than any of the other gens once you take off the nostalgia glasses. I dont think you can keep going with pokemon the way it is now for too much longer, but Im sure theres still a gen or two left in it. Youve still got different things you could do, and even jst little changes like new dual types, starting with something other than fire/water/grass as your starter, new eevolutions or just new evolutions for pokemon that could use them by now could all help. and of coures if you put every pokemon in the games that would be nice thoug I know why nintendo doesnt do it.

Then again I didnt care for the pokemon rescue series games, though I do like what Im seeing from that new game they're advertising that looks like a cross over from another game.

This would be amazing. Not only would the fans of the series feel better about themselves, and awesome that they've inputted somewhat into the series, but because of the insane amounts of creativity and imagination seen with some of the 'Fakemon,' the entire series would be so much better. I'd easily get back into it with that.

@Anthony - I don't so much think the Pokemon names/appearances are 'dumb.' To me... the whole 'novelty' of the basic idea wore off. Originally it was like "Wow, this guy took real life animals and turned them into some amazing creatures with cool attacks. This is such a new and creative thing that I've never heard of." And obviously it was great, because 'rip-offs' came out, such as Yu-Gi-Oh and Digimon.

But now, after a decade of the same thing, turning the same animals into some creatures with few creative attacks added, it just doesn't interest me anymore.

ok... i have to stop you there, Jay... one is not to compare Yu-Gi-Oh! to pokemon... if one is to compare it to something, compare it to MTG. but even then YGO is a game all in it's own which can't really be compared to other games

As much as I hate to break it to you but Digimon and Pokemon came out around the same time. Some people say Digimon came before Pokemon not sure which if thats true since you can easily get conflicting answers.

Digimon's first public mention was 1999. Pokemon's was 1996. I think we can figure out which one was first. :p

Squall, you can't honestly say that YGH has no resemblance to Pokemon whatsoever.
The creator of it has even cited Pokemon as an influence in an interview. I'll see if I can find a link, so I don't seem to be just talking out of myass.

Well, first, I typo-ed that. First Digimon mention was '97. Not '99.

The first public appearance of anything related to the Digimon franchise was the Digital Monster virtual pet. Which was released in 1997.

The first public appearance of anything related to the Pokemon franchise was the first two versions of the game, Red and Green. Which were released in 1996.

A year hardly makes something a copycat the dates are close enough to where I can say they are two different idea though in some things you would think Pokemon was coping Digimon.

Pokemon was released in early '97 and was an instant hit in Japan, hitting an insanely high popularity in only a few weeks. They were translated for other countries in only two years because of their popularity.
But throwing their worldwide popularity out the window - let's focus only on the Japanese popularity - the country where both Pokemon and Digimon were created.
Taking into consideration how popular the series was, nearly every single person in the country new about the series. I could have stolen and slightly tweeked the entire concept of the series in a month.
Whoever created Digimon had a year and a half to change what Pokemon was.
A year is a long time. Especially if it's only to change around some already-created idea.

The first public appearance of the YGO franchise was in the manga. First issue was published in December of '96. Pokemon was first released in February of that year.

I'm not saying that anything was 'copied' from Pokemon. I'm just saying that Pokemon probably greatly influenced these other similar things. Just because of the popularity of the series.
It doesn't even make sense to deny that, in my opinion. Maybe I'm just narrow-minded. But that's how the world works. Something hits an insanely large amount of popularity, and everyone else wants in on it, so they only slightly change it to make it new enough, but you can still see some obvious similarities.

Could it? I was only trying to show that Pokemon was the original. I think I did that? xD

You cannot prove who had the idea first though. =p

Of course not. But since ideas that are only in someone's mind don't count for anything, it doesn't matter. It all depends on who makes bank first. ;p
