I've never even been to washington state (though its something i want to do jsut to see the pearl jam museum and seattle itself since that's where grunge started (for the most part).

I wouldn't say "for the most part." Grunge definitely started in Seattle, no doubt about it.

well, the big Grunge 4 came out of seattle, but I there were grunge bands before them and I dont knwo if teh all came out of seattle.

Don't forget the Seattle coffee.

I'm pretty positive that all initial grunge bands are from Washington - Maybe not Seattle in particular, but definitely from the state. Unless you count the major influences on grunge - Like Pixes or Sonic Youth and whatnot. They're from the east coast, I believe. But I'd say they're more alt.rock than grunge.

Why Washington?

At the time grunge music started, the main focus was on music coming from the Californian West Coast and the Northeast Coast. But Washington - Seattle in particular - has always been a hugely music-heavy area. A lot of experimentation going on.
Some random bands started playing music with heavily distorted guitars, rough vocals, and just kind of bring rock music to... a bare minimum, in a way. Meaning... not a bunch of flashy shows and clothes and crap. Just basic music.
Eventually some bands became very popular outside of the Seattle area - Nirvana, as one major example. Or even Soundgarden, if they're still considered 'grunge.'

I dont think anyone still around of those bands are considred grunge anymore, that was more a period labeling. Guys like pearl jam, soundgarden, alice in chains, they get put into the rock/hard rock/alt rock/occasionally metal categories now, at least if they do anyhting new. I know Alice in Chains has defninitely changed the way they do new music though I still enjoy it.

Did you hear about the change to Stone Temple Pilots that happened in the middle of last year? New lead singer - Chester Bennington (from Linkin Park). And a name change. To... 'Stone Temple Pilots with Chester Bennington.'

Yeah I heard. I'm not really a fan, I feel like they lost too much to be the same (which is something they seem to be going for). When alice in chains changed their style you could tell they were going for something different and it was really more Cantrell's baby than Layne's (even if his mother doesnt like it an thinks she should still be getting a cut). With pearl jam its a little different, they never had that hard break and have kinda always been around, though I dont like Mind Your Manners so much as I like Sirens (MYM sounds too much like SOAD, while Sirens sounds like old classic Pearl Jam, kinda like Man of the Hour).

did you also here that Nirvana is going to have somoene perform in cobain's place at their Rock and Roll HOF induction? I mean, it's not like they can't, Queen had I think Adam Lambert perform with them in place of Freddie Mercury, but it seems weird when ost of Nirvana's success came off our Cobain's personality and him frontmanning.

Though it will be cool if Grohl gets in twice with Nirvana and Foo Fighters.
