Sounds like a plan.
It could be a nice touch if the notification and message icons glows red or some other colour of choice when you have a notification.message. That or a number - depending on how many notifications/messages you have - appears next to it.

Fix the submit one (It looks like two amorphous blobs, nothing more.), and make them look less pixel-ish. And the key makes me think more of settings, not account. Are the message and friends ones onto have a little number or symbol next to the icon for when you get a message or a friend request?

The Submit one is the SC logo, but black and white.

I actually had a plan for that. When you hover over an image, or it's active, it turns red. An image is active when you have a message, friend request, or notification. You also get a small number beside it like we do now (1) to show how many.
It's the SC symbol, and no. If you make them look less like pixels, you make them look blurry. I'm not having actual blobs there.

I do think they should have some sort of colouring in them, it'd make them look much nicer.
